21st Cartographic History Colloquium

July 04-07, 2024, Jade University

During the colloquium hosted by Jade University, the DiViAS project was represented by the case study "Movement" in a poster session on September 6th. Maximilian Herbers, Jennifer Tadge, Stefan Fuest, Rieke Marie Kaiser and Andreas Gollenstede provided insights into the "Visualisation of 18th/19th Century Shipping Routes with Uncertain Spatiotemporal Data." In the first part, they presented the historical source material, along with the transcription process using Transkribus, and the classification and extraction of entities with the help of natural language processing and transformer-based language models. The second part showcased a draft of a data model for the storage of routes, along with suggestions for visualising uncertain data. Following a brief talk by Stefan Fuest, in which the poster was introduced, a lively exchange took place between the presenters and other conference participants.
